I had mentioned over on my Instagram at one point that my mother in law makes the perfect homemade bread. No matter how hard I try, I can't quite do it how she does of course! However, after many many attempts, this is about as close as I can get and my husband has approved! I make a fresh batch of dough every night before bed and make it in the morning. We eat it with eggs and tomatoes, any sort of soup or stew recipe, and the kids will snack on it with butter on it! So as promised, here is how I do it!
INGREDIENTS
3 cups all purpose flour, (plus more for dusting)
1 Tbsp salt
1/2 tsp. yeast
1 1/4 c warm water
INSTRUCTIONS
In a larger bowl combine all of the above ingredients. You will get a shaggy, slightly sticky like dough. Let it rise, covered, for 3 hours in a warm place. When you are ready to cook it, preheat your oven to 400 degrees F, and lightly dust your dough with a handful of flour. Gently folding the outside edges into the middle, make your way around the dough until the flour is completely kneaded in and set it onto an oiled pan. (I use a round pizza pan.) Run your hands under the faucet to get your hands wet and press down on the dough so that it is flat. (This next step is optional but will give your bread a beautiful red color.) Combine 1 Tbsp flour & 2 Tbsp water in a small dish and pour the thick liquid over the dough. Taking your hand, rub the mixture around the top of the dough. Using a fork, poke the dough in a straight line down the middle, as well as a straight line down either side of the middle line of pokes. (These keeps dough from rising too much and becoming hallow in the middle.) There you have it! Put it in the oven for 30-45 minutes, checking for the top to be a red crust. When you are done, take it out and let it cool before slicing it in half, and slicing those halves into as many pieces as you would like! Enjoy with pretty much anything!
